Best SEO MCP servers in 2026: what exists and what each one is for

SEO MCP servers come in two kinds. Data servers, such as Ahrefs, Semrush and DataForSEO, give an agent keyword, ranking and backlink data from an index. Audit servers, such as squirrelscan, Sitebulb and Crawlwise, read your own pages and report what is wrong. Most people who do real SEO work in an agent end up wanting one of each.

Key takeaways

  • Data servers (Ahrefs, Semrush, DataForSEO) answer questions about the web; audit servers (squirrelscan, Sitebulb, Crawlwise) answer questions about your pages.
  • The Ahrefs and Semrush servers spend the same API units as their APIs, so a chatty agent costs real money.
  • squirrelscan is the free, open-source choice for whole-site audits from a terminal.
  • Crawlwise is the one that fetches your page as each AI crawler and reports whether it got through.

An MCP server lets an agent call a tool instead of guessing. For SEO that sounds like one category, but it is really two. Some servers hand the agent an index of the web: keyword volumes, rankings, backlinks. Others read your own pages and tell the agent what is broken. Knowing which kind you need saves you an afternoon of connecting the wrong one.

The two kinds of SEO MCP server

Data servers answer questions about the web. “What does this keyword get searched for?” “Who links to my competitor?” They are only as good as the index behind them, and that index is what you pay for.

Audit servers answer questions about your site. “Is this canonical wrong?” “Can GPTBot read this page?” They fetch your pages and apply rules, so the answer is about what your server returns today.

The list, side by side

Data servers: Ahrefs, Semrush and DataForSEO

Ahrefs runs a hosted server at api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp. You approve it once and it gets its own key, or you generate an MCP key yourself. Every call draws from your monthly API units, and workspace admins can cap units per key, which is worth doing before you leave an agent alone with it. If backlinks are the question, this is the deepest index on the list.

Semrush also runs a hosted server, covering its SEO API, its Trends API (depending on your Trends subscription) and the read-only part of the Projects API. Its docs name the plans that include 50,000 API units, and requests spend those units the same way direct API calls do. Pick it if your team already lives in Semrush.

DataForSEO publishes an open-source server whose current version is deliberately small: tools to search DataForSEO’s documentation, plus one tool that makes any authenticated API request. That makes it flexible, and it means the agent decides how much you spend. open-seo wraps the same data in a self-hosted app with an MCP server of around forty tools, which suits people who would rather run software than pay a subscription.

A data server tells the agent about the web. An audit server tells it about your page. Most real work needs both answers.

Audit servers: squirrelscan, Sitebulb and Crawlwise

squirrelscan is the strongest free option. The CLI is MIT licensed, crawls a whole site on your machine with no account, and runs 299+ rules across 21 categories. Its local MCP server starts with squirrel mcp, and a remote one exists too. Its cloud renders pages in a headless browser, which matters for single-page apps. If you want whole-site audits inside your terminal at no cost, start there; our squirrelscan comparison goes into detail.

Sitebulb lists MCP access on both of its plans, so an agent can work with audits from a crawler that handles 10,000 URLs on Lite and 500,000 by default on Pro, with JavaScript rendering included. If your site is large and you already own Sitebulb, connecting it is the obvious move.

Crawlwise is a remote server at https://crawlwise.site/mcp with 15 tools, from audit_page and crawl_site to check_ai_crawlers, validate_schema, generate_robots_txt and estimate_cost. Sign-in is OAuth and it needs Pro or above. The thing it does that the others on this list do not: it fetches your page as about 17 AI crawlers, including GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and reports whether each one actually got through, so a CDN or firewall block shows up even when robots.txt looks fine. Every finding cites the check that produced it, anything it could not measure is marked not measured, and there is no letter grade to argue with.

Where Crawlwise is the weaker choice

  • It does not render JavaScript. It reads the HTML the server returns.
  • It runs far fewer rules than squirrelscan, and its site crawl stops at 10,000 pages on the largest plan.
  • It owns no keyword or backlink index. For those questions, Ahrefs or Semrush is the right server.
  • The MCP server is a paid feature. squirrelscan’s local server is free.

How to choose in five minutes

Write down the last three SEO questions you asked. If they were about keywords, rankings or links, connect a data server you already pay for. If they were about your own pages, connect an audit server. If one of them was “why does ChatGPT never cite us?”, check crawler access first, because no amount of content work helps a page the crawler cannot fetch. The free AI crawler check answers that without an account.

To add Crawlwise to Claude Code, the setup is one line; the MCP docs cover Cursor, Windsurf and the rest, and integrations lists every client:

claude mcp add --transport http crawlwise https://crawlwise.site/mcp

If you would rather try it before connecting anything, the CLI audits one page a day free with no account:

npx crawlwise audit https://your-site.com

What a plan actually costs

The free tools stay free. You can open them, run them, and leave without an account. A plan is for the moment you want the report saved, a few sites watched, or the same checks from the API. The price on this table is the price at checkout. A yearly plan is ten months of the monthly price, so two months are on us.

PlanMonthlyCreditsA good fit when
Starter$4.9910You look after one site and check it now and then
Pro$14.9940A few sites, plus the API and a handful of watched URLs
Studio$49.99150Client work that would burn through Pro mid-month
Agency$99.99400Many locations, reported under your own name

A single-page audit is about 1.25 credits, and that includes the live probe of answer-engine crawlers. You see the estimate before anything runs. If a hold is not used, it comes back to your balance. Extra credits, when you already subscribe, are $9.99 for 20.
