How to get your website mentioned by ChatGPT: what you can control and what you can’t

You cannot make ChatGPT mention you, but you can remove the reasons it cannot. Allow OAI-SearchBot so ChatGPT search can find your pages, answer the question plainly on a page that covers it, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites. Then check with a real question, and treat each answer as a snapshot.

Key takeaways

  • ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot: OpenAI says opted-out sites are not shown in its search answers.
  • GPTBot is a separate training setting; most sites that block it also block OAI-SearchBot by accident.
  • Mentions on other sites correlate with AI visibility, so the sites ChatGPT cites are your outreach list.
  • One answer is a snapshot. Check the same questions over time before drawing conclusions.

Most advice on “ranking in ChatGPT” skips the part that decides whether anything else matters: can ChatGPT’s search crawler read your site at all? This guide splits the problem into what you can control, what you cannot, and how to check where you stand.

How does ChatGPT decide what to mention?

There are two routes. ChatGPT can answer from what its model learned in training, or it can search the web while it answers and cite the pages it read. The first route you cannot change quickly: what a model learned is fixed until the next model. The second route is the one you can work on, and OpenAI documents its entrance. OAI-SearchBot “is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT’s search features.”

What can you control?

1. Whether OAI-SearchBot can reach you

OpenAI is explicit: “Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers,” and it recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. GPTBot is a separate setting for training, and blocking it does not remove you from search. Many sites get this wrong. In the Crawlwise AI Crawler Access Report (top-10000 run, 2026-Q4: the first 10,000 domains of the Cisco Umbrella top-one-million list, each probed once on October 1, 2026), among the 1,837 domains with a readable robots.txt, 785 disallowed GPTBot and 728 of those also disallowed OAI-SearchBot; only 57 blocked training while staying in search. The list ranks hostnames by DNS popularity, so it includes API, CDN and update hosts that never serve a web page, and only the homepage path was probed. Treat the shares as a description of that list, not of the whole web.

OpenAI says it “can take ~24 hours from a site’s robots.txt update for our systems to adjust.” Check your CDN as well: a firewall rule can block the crawler even when robots.txt allows it. The full split is in GPTBot vs OAI-SearchBot vs ChatGPT-User.

2. Whether a page answers the question

ChatGPT can only cite a page that covers the question being asked. Pick the questions your customers really ask, make sure one page owns each, and put the answer in the opening lines of that section, in the server HTML. If the page needs JavaScript to show its text, assume a crawler may see an empty shell.

3. Whether other sites mention you

Answer engines cite sources, and those sources talk about brands. Ahrefs analysed 75,000 brands and found that branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66 to 0.71. The practical version: look at which sites ChatGPT cites for your topic, and earn a genuine mention on the ones you can — a review, a comparison, a directory listing, a useful answer in a community.

4. Whether you are easy to identify

Use one name for your product, the same short description on your site and your profiles, and an about and contact page that says who is behind it. No AI vendor documents this as a citation signal. It still helps any reader, human or machine, tell you apart from a company with a similar name.

You cannot make ChatGPT mention you. You can remove every reason it could not.

What can’t you control?

  • Which sources ChatGPT picks. OpenAI does not publish how it chooses the pages it cites.
  • What the model already learned. Training data is fixed for each model.
  • The wording of any one answer. Ask the same question twice and the answer can change. One check is a snapshot, not a ranking.

How do you check whether ChatGPT mentions you?

  1. Run the free AI crawler checker on your homepage and your most important page. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, fix that first; nothing else matters until you do.
  2. Write down five questions a customer would ask before buying what you sell — about the problem, not your brand name.
  3. Ask one of them with the free AI mention checker, which reports whether your brand was named in the answer, as a snapshot.
  4. To ask the same questions on a schedule across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, use AI visibility on a verified site. When you are not mentioned, its “Why not?” view checks, in order, whether the crawler can reach you, whether a page covers the question, and whether that page answers it — and says “we cannot establish why” when none of those explains it.

How do you see visits from ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s publisher FAQ says “ChatGPT automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs.” Those visits show up in your analytics, and this guide shows how to separate them in GA4. A mention without a click shows up nowhere in analytics, which is why checking the answers themselves matters. For how this fits the wider picture, see what GEO is.

How Crawlwise tests this

The AI crawler checker shows GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User as separate rows, so a training opt-out is never mistaken for a search block. The AI mention checker asks one question and reports whether your brand was named. On a plan, AI visibility asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity your questions for 0.25 credits a question, records the sources each one cited, and runs the diagnosis on data you already have: it costs no credits, apart from a crawler re-check when the last one is more than a day old. There is no AI visibility score. A mention, a citation and a cited source are each reported as what they are.

Every check, what counts as a block, and what the checks cannot see are written up on the methodology page.

What a plan actually costs

The free tools stay free. You can open them, run them, and leave without an account. A plan is for the moment you want the report saved, a few sites watched, or the same checks from the API. The price on this table is the price at checkout. A yearly plan is ten months of the monthly price, so two months are on us.

PlanMonthlyCreditsA good fit when
Starter$4.9910You look after one site and check it now and then
Pro$14.9940A few sites, plus the API and a handful of watched URLs
Studio$49.99150Client work that would burn through Pro mid-month
Agency$99.99400Many locations, reported under your own name

A single-page audit is about 1.25 credits, and that includes the live probe of answer-engine crawlers. You see the estimate before anything runs. If a hold is not used, it comes back to your balance. Extra credits, when you already subscribe, are $9.99 for 20.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT mentioning me?

Not by itself. OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as independent settings. ChatGPT search answers depend on OAI-SearchBot.

How long after allowing OAI-SearchBot can I appear?

OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt change for its systems to adjust. After that, appearing becomes possible; it is not guaranteed.

Will schema markup or llms.txt get me mentioned?

OpenAI’s crawler documentation mentions neither. Keep accurate structured data for search engines, but do not expect it to switch on mentions.

Why does ChatGPT mention a competitor and not me?

Often because the pages ChatGPT cited for that question mention them. Read the cited sources for the question: they are the most practical outreach list you will get.
